DI-804
Internet Server/Firewall

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question #1:   I cannot connect to Telstra Cable service or will connect but connection drops out every 5-10 mins.

The problem is most likely to be related to the "heartbeat" software Telstra is using. This heartbeat program sends a signal to/from Telstra every 5 minutes. When Telstra is not getting a reply from you every 5 minutes - it cuts you off. There is however an updated firmware for DI-804 that covers the changes which Telstra have made on their servers.

Please download the modified firmware (last modified: 26 Apr 2002) from here www.dlink.com.au/tech/drivers/files/internets/di804.htm.

In addition please read the "Readme.txt" file for instructions on how to load the firmware.

If the problem is still there, then please try to enter the MAC address of your Network Adapter under Basic Setup - Internet Settings - "Specify a MAC Address".
To find out the MAC address of your Network Adapter:

  • in Win95/98 - go to Start > Run > winipcfg > OK > select your adapter and look for Adapter Address.
  • in Win2000/XP go to Start > Run > cmd > OK > ipconfig /all > look for Physical Address.

Alternatively you can use an older version of firmware which is available here: http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/drivers/files/internets/di804firmw.htm (last modified: Nov 2001)

Question #2:   I cannot set up PPTP server behind DI-804.

1) Please load the latest firmware available here.
2) Do the Restore Default Settings under System Management.
3) Then re-configuring DI-804 from your PPTP server's browser, tick the PPTP Server checkbox under Basic Setup > Specific Application Support.
That should resolve it. For further technical enquiries and feedback on this feature, please write to support@dlink.com.au.

Question #3:   I cannot send or receive e-mail but can browse the Internet

Check the name of your mail server. If it is just "mail" or "mail-hub" - change it to "mail.nsw.optushome.com.au" or "mail-hub.nsw.bigpond.net.au" (depending on what Domain Suffix the ISP is using in your area).

In Outlook Express you can change the name of your mail server under Tools > Accounts > Mail > Properties > Servers.

Some e-mail applications require you to enter the Domain Suffix when you configure your network and TCP/IP settings. The Domain Suffix is the unique identifier for your email server. Some ISPs require you to configure TCP/IP and include the Domain Suffix in order for your email to work properly.

The Domain Suffix is the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) address of the email server you are using. Your cable modem or DSL provider usually lists it somewhere on your invoice. (Throughout this FAQ, D-Link and the other settings you see in the figures are only examples. Your information may be different.) The Domain Suffix address should appear similar to this: nsw.optushome.com.au or nsw.bigpond.net.au. Find the Domain Suffix on your invoice or call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to obtain it.
